Balletcore style, explained: what to wear and how to style it

Short answer

Balletcore is a style built from dancewear. Its defining pieces are ballet flats, a wrap cardigan, a leotard or bodysuit and a tulle skirt. Glamour's styling rule is to mix dancewear with street clothes, such as a leotard and sweatpants under a sweatshirt and oversized coat, so the look reads as a dancer off duty and not a costume.

  1. Start with a dancewear base

Pick a leotard, a bodysuit or a ribbed knit top. Glamour wears a leotard as the top of the outfit, so let it show.

  2. Add the layer

Put a wrap cardigan over it, or an oversized coat if it is cold. Both are on the editors' lists.

  3. Choose the bottom

Try a miniskirt with high boots, baggy low-rise jeans, or stirrup leggings under a skirt or on their own.

  4. Pick the shoes

Ballet flats or ballet sneakers. Marie Claire styles flats with stirrup leggings and a chunky jacket.

  5. Finish with a hair ribbon and one check

Tie a ribbon in your hair, then check that the dancewear is mixed with regular clothes. One or two dance pieces per outfit is plenty.

What balletcore is and where it comes from

Balletcore borrows from dancewear: ballet flats, wrap cardigans, leotards, stirrup leggings and tutus. You will also see it called ballet core, dancer off-duty and sneakerina.

Marie Claire cites a Lyst report from the first quarter that found searches for ballet sneakers up 1,300 percent. Vogue ran a piece on Rosalia and balletcore, and notes the aesthetic is still evolving, with tutus and dance-inspired layers joining the mix. Glamour covered Rosalia too, in a story on ballet leotards as a trend for spring 2026.

The common thread is that dancewear gets worn as clothing, not as costume. A leotard becomes a top, a wrap cardigan becomes a jacket, and flats or sneakers replace the heel.

Key balletcore pieces

These ten pieces come up across the editors' guides. You do not need all of them. Pick one or two and build the rest of the outfit from clothes you already own, the way Glamour mixes dancewear with street clothes.

A short way to read the list: the dancewear pieces are the flats, sneakers, leotard, wrap cardigan, stirrup leggings, leg warmers and tutu. The street-clothes pieces are the oversized coat and boots, which keep the outfit grounded.

  • Ballet flats
  • Ballet sneakers
  • Leotard or bodysuit
  • Wrap cardigan
  • Stirrup leggings
  • Leg warmers
  • Tulle tutu skirt
  • Ribbon hair accessories
  • Oversized coat
  • Boots over leggings

Balletcore colors and fabrics

The base palette is ballet pink, black and white. Marie Claire adds a twist: bold primary colors with ballet flats, such as a red cardigan with oversized jeans.

Fabrics stay soft and close to the body. Look for tulle, satin, jersey knit, ribbed knit and soft leather.

A black leotard with ballet pink flats is the simplest version. A white wrap cardigan over a black base is the next step. Add red only when you want the outfit to stand out.

How editors are styling balletcore now

Each of these ideas comes straight from a published guide.

The pattern across all five: one dancewear piece, one chunky or oversized piece. The contrast is what makes it feel current.

  • Glamour: wear a leotard as a top with a miniskirt and high boots, or with baggy low-rise jeans and sneakers.
  • Glamour, on Rosalia: put a leotard and sweatpants under a sweatshirt and an oversized coat.
  • Marie Claire: style ballet flats with stirrup leggings and a chunky jacket for warmth.
  • Marie Claire: try ballet flats with bold primary colors, like a red cardigan and oversized jeans.
  • Vogue: add a tutu skirt to make a dancer off-duty outfit.

Three outfit formulas

Leotard, miniskirt and high boots (Glamour). Leotard, baggy low-rise jeans and sneakers (Glamour). Wrap cardigan, stirrup leggings, ballet flats and a chunky jacket (Marie Claire).

Wearing balletcore in late fall and winter 2026

Balletcore works with knits and outerwear. Glamour's off-duty ballerina look layers leotards with sweatpants, oversized coats and boots, and Marie Claire styles flats with stirrup leggings and heavy jackets. Wrap cardigans and leg warmers do the warming, and the dancewear stays visible underneath.

A practical order for cold days: leotard or ribbed top first, wrap cardigan second, oversized coat last. Boots go over leggings, which is one of the key pieces in the guides. Leg warmers add a layer at the ankle without changing the shape.

Shop the balletcore look at PeachSunday

Start with the shoes collection for flats, including knit ballet flats and bow-trimmed slip-ons, then the accessories collection for satin bow hair ties and bow-handle bags. New styles are added daily, and shipping is free in the US on orders of $65 or more.

Search PeachSunday for ballet flats, bow, wrap cardigan, tulle and leg warmers. For a full outfit around one piece, see our fall outfits guide.

If you are buying one thing first, make it the shoes. Flats are the easiest piece to repeat across outfits, and a bow accessory adds the ribbon detail without changing your whole closet.
